Good Afternoon, Girlfriends!
Hopefully my new arrangement will make it to you...y'all know my technical skills leave A LOT to be desired! Thank you for making the transition with me. This is a really exciting time in my life right now...exciting, but uncertain as well. As I'm typing this out to y'all, I'm being serenaded by Bon Jovi. Odd music choice for me, considering that I'm usually rockin' out to old school Country! Hey, every now and then even country girls need a little rock-n-roll.
I was actually listening to them a couple of days ago, and that's when this Thought originated. Livin' On A Prayer was blasting through my bathroom as I was getting ready for the day. It made me think: isn't that what we are all really doing? Living on a prayer? It's not been a secret that the past few years have been more than a little stressful (financially) at my house. My husband has been riding a wave of unstability in the Marketplace for the past three and a half years. All praise to God that a.) we made it through that alive and b.) the tide seems to be turning. Living on a prayer. There were days when I couldn't do anything but pray. When you find yourself in times and situations like that, it would be very easy to roll up under the cover and protection of your favorite blanket and just lock the world outside your door. But is that reality? Can we really live like that? No. Probably not.
Let's take a look at the Book and see what it has to say about living on a prayer. As you can imagine, there are many verses and places that speak on the topic of prayer. Let me ask you, how do you pray? When do you pray? Do you know that prayer is a gift? It is. The ability to talk openly with our heavenly Father was only made available to us through the redeeming work of His Son Jesus Christ on the Cross. Before the Cross, a lot of things were different. Does that mean that God couldn't hear the prayers and groans of His people...no, of course not. God is all-powerful, all-knowing. But the relationship was different. For instance, when the Israelites were enslaved to the Egyptians, do you think God was oblivious to their conditions and their sufferings? He most certainly was not. Exodus 2:23-25, "...The Isaelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning...So God looked on the Isaelites and was concerned about them." God knew. God knows. He always knows. We can skip ahead to the New Testament, Romans 12:12 "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." And one of my all time favorite verses, (yes--it's in the NEW TESTAMENT, for those of you gasping from shock, just because I spend most of my time in the Old Testament, doesn't mean I can't LOVE the New!) is from Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
So, what do we walk away with? Well, God knows when we are suffering. He knows when we are enslaved, tangled and distracted by the things of this world. We are called to be patient during our afflictions. Girls, I can tell you first-hand that is one tough order to fill. But, God through His infinite wisdom and mercy will help you. His Spirit will enable you and me to find the joyful hope in every situation, and leads us to be faithful in prayer. If I'm completely honest with you, my prayers on a lot of those darkest days, were murmuring the Name, "Jesus. Jesus." Over and over and over again. I didn't have the strength to put one foot in front of the other. But that was alright, because in my weakness, I am made strong through Him. He was holding on to me the entire time. He will hold on to you, too. Will trust Him today? Will you live on a prayer this day? I encourage you to try. The results are out of this world. Blessings on your weekend!
